Why Look For The Union Made Label?
From unionlabel.org : The "Union
Label" on a product, the "Union Shop Card" or the "Union Store Card" placard in
a place of business, the "Service Button" worn or exhibited to solicit patronage
for union establishments or union members -- all signify quality products and services.
Moreover, these symbols of quality demonstrate that the union employees who make
the product or provide the service are skilled workers who are treated fairly
and decently by their employers. These symbols of are found everywhere -- from
washing machines to baked goods, from shoes to skyscrapers, from clothing to
barber shops.
The union label shows that labor and
management have signed a binding contract, with each side guaranteeing their
best -- their best work, their best compensation, their best benefits. It's a
"win-win" arrangement for everyone -- labor, management, consumers and the
community, where the economy benefits from the paychecks and taxes of well-paid
workers.
So, look for the Union Label
whenever and wherever you can!
From Unionwear.com:
Why
Unions Buy Union
Smart
union business agents demand the union label on their union logo gear in order
to keep the labor movement healthy. Simply put, buying union increases union
employment, which strengthens the labor movement, so buying nonunion reduces
union job security. These guidelines can ensure that you are not unintentionally
helping businesses take advantage of unions.
It’s OK to
Request Verification
If you
are skeptical of the union status of the manufacturer or your union logo
products, request a letter signed by an elected official of the manufacturer’s
union local stating that collective bargaining is in place during the period
your products are being manufactured. It is also reasonable to request a
written
guarantee of a full refund if deceptive labeling is later determined.. Made in
USA is NOT Union Made There are still sweatshops in this country, and even
loopholes to enable products with “US Made” tags to be manufactured offshore.
Put your Union Logo on Union Label Garments with Union Bug Printing or
Embroidery for maximum benefit to the labor movement.
Deceptive
Labeling
Clothing companies have sewn clothing labels which say “union made” into
nonunion clothing. If no other label on the garment identifies a particular
union (e.g. Union Made by Unite!) on that label or a separate label, request
verification. Union shops may subcontract work on products that they don’t
manufacture, yet supply the nonunion manufacturer with their union labels. If
your vendor’s union labels appear on products they subcontracted, request
verification. Remember that a union screen print job does not make the nonunion
shirt its printed on “union made”.
Counterfeit Labeling
Labels
of origin have been removed and replaced with Union Made in America labels.
Labels are generally sewn during manufacturing, not as a separate process.
Request verification if it looks like a label has been sewn in after the garment
was sewn. New Protection From the Law The U.S. Supreme Court will decide this
spring in the matter of Kasky vs. Nike whether misleading consumers about labor
conditions constitutes a violation of “truth in advertising” laws.
DON’T LOOK THE OTHER WAY!
